Summer Lovin'

We've been enjoying the bounty of summer fruit. We've been blueberry picking in Somis and hitting up the local Farmer's Markets in Ventura and Oxnard and getting the most sweet, juicy peaches, pluots and apricots (not to mention some addictively yummy homemade hummus). My girls are in fruit heaven...as is my fruit-lovin' husband.

Here's Liv giving blueberry picking some serious contemplation and attention.

And here is what Liv enjoyed doing after we brought home our delicious round of summer fruit from Farmer's Market. Note the lid to the hummus which was disappearing rapidly as Livy arranged her fruit masterpiece.

You're Kidding Me?

Have I mentioned lately how much I love the age of 3? Actually three and a half to be precise. I think I smile and laugh half the day thanks to the sense of humor, imagination and pure sweetness of my Olivia. Because she is so observant and so currently aware of both subtle and not-so-subtle social mores, she is starting to try the out in everyday communication with us and it's a blast.

My favorite is her use of the "You're kidding me" phrase. If I tease her about something and she's not completely sure I'm teasing, she'll look at me with this funny look in her eye and say "You're kidding me?" almost in a questioning tone, like she's unsure if I'm teasing or not. Where an adult might say, "You're joking" or "You're too much!", she always says it the same, "You're kidding me!" and she laughs whether she gets the joke or not. It's very sweet.

Paul's current favorite (and the one to which I grudgingly smile while surreptitiously covering said smile) is Olivia's current practice of calling me Jenni. All kids practice using their parent's names, and she has called me Jen numerous times in the past. But she has picked up on the exact tone Paul uses when he teases me by calling me Jenni, more like "Jen-E", with his same goofy laugh and teasing little grin. And she typically does it only when he's around because of course he gives her great satisfaction by laughing hysterically at her imitation. Oh the things their daddies teach them...

Her imagination is furiously at work and we walked in the other morning to find that her pre-bedtime routine had included a ballet class in which many of her animals were dressed in her skirts (which she assured me were actually tutus). Yes, we are quite obsessed with all things ballet lately, and as much as she is loving her class and is very serious about it, Paul thinks it has more to do with her love for ballet gear (i.e. tutus and slippers) than her interest in the dance itself.

The other day she brought a book to her table at lunchtime and I figured it was something she'd just finished reading while I was preparing her lunch. Nope. She brought reading material to enjoy during lunch. Yep, guess she's picking up some stuff from mom too...

And since we've been busy practicing jumping on one foot in gymnastics, Olivia takes every opportunity to practice this skill at every opportunity, including while holding mom's hand while crossing the street. Must be very entertaining for cars that are waiting for us to hurry up and cross I'm sure. Here she is practicing while we enjoyed an afternoon at Padaro Grill in Carpinteria.

Speaking of Padaro Grill, I think I've figured out why she's always excited about going there with Daddy and I...

Quiet, lovely days

This is the kind of day I imagined when I pictured myself staying home with children. The morning started with an ordinary breakfast of cereal and toast for me and the kiddos, followed by some quiet play time and me doing the dishes. The girls have colds, so no school for Livy and no plans with friends either. Malia was down for a nap early, so Liv and I enjoyed a cup of tea and a little craft time, which ended up including glitter (um...who invented this insidious stuff? It's in every crack and crevice and I even have some stuck to my cheek and cannot for the life of me rub it off!) I thought I was so smart to do the glitter outside, forgetting that my child would be wearing much of the glitter when the art project was completed. Now the patio and my kitchen floor are covered in minute speckles of red, yellow and green.

Mid-morning was spent online organizing some meals for my friend Kristen who just had her baby (welcome Junebug!) and researching gift ideas for my cousin-in-law Justine, who is graduating from high school (!) in just a few days, while Liv watched the movie "Alice in Wonderland" for the first time. I won't go into the fact that when I met Paul, his God-daughter Justine was in something like second grade...ah-yah how time flies!

But my favorite part of the day was lunch time. Livy washed the grapes, then crunched on celery while I prepared some chicken salad for myself. She wasn't sold on the chicken salad, but still helped me mix in the mayo, apples, celery and curry powder and gamely took a bite when my sandwich was all put together. She stood at the island as I made our sandwiches (her turkey and cheese with mayo on wheat with grapes on the side, my chicken salad on wheat with grapes as well) and we chatted and laughed and played her favorite game of late ("I love you in the morning", "I love you in the dark", etc.) Very sweet game for a very sweet morning together. No, three is not the easiest age, but it is a very loveable and fun age full of imagination, intensity and love.

The Bookworm Strikes Again

What a month of literary madness! I'm amazed I got anything done or even peeked my nose out of my books long enough to make conversation and participate in the world around me. I've read some FABULOUS books though:

Olive Kitteredge
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Twilight Series (all four books)
Certain Girls

Quite a variety...a little vampire teen romance, a little Pulitzer Prize winning fiction, a little carefree, lightweight girlie frippery...it's been quite fun. Well, my kind of fun anyway. See what a couple gift cards to Barnes n Noble for my Birthday get me? Guess I should probably go play with my kids and pay some attention to Paul as I'm thinking I've probably shunned everyone a bit while I was lost in the worlds of vampires, lonely small-town folk and post-World War II island recovery. Oh how I love getting lost in a book!!

Just one of those days...

...where I want to pull my hair out and I'd welcome the thought of an inbox of work or a day full of monotonous meetings if it meant I could escape the insanity and chaos of this place I call home. It's a world of poorly napped (well, one hasn't even napped, hence the problem) children which has led to 2 cling-on children, a reign of terror and mayhem, and a kitchen of incomplete chores.
I knew having two children close in age would lead to some rough days and a more hectic pace to life for awhile. I knew the first couple of years could prove lively and full; so I'm trying to remind myself that today was one of those "full" days...full of constant messes, full of picking-up after children, full of fussing and neediness.

Full day of dishes...I'm not sure I do much else each day besides make 3 meals a day and 2 snacks, so the dishes are a constant battle...and if you don't do them right away, then they grow and multiply and begin to take over the kitchen...hence...
And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that quiet = big trouble. So as I'm in one room cleaning up a mess and attempting to put away laundry that has been clean for 3 days, yet remained folded (then later unfolded by an 11 month old) in the laundry basket and finally getting put away in dressers in the girl's rooms, there is yet another disaster unfolding in the other room...
